Polish Week: consul-ambassador and minister-counselor visit K.H.Kempen (30 November 2011)
On the occasion of the Polish presidency of the European Union during the second half of 2011, K.H.Kempen organized a Polish week on the four campuses. Polish food to eat, Polish films to watch, information stands with tourist, cultural and European information: all this gave the students and personnel a "taste of Poland". On 30 November 2011 there was an academic session with the title "Our common European future with Poland". We welcomed the Polish consul-ambassador Mr Piotr Wojtczak, the Polish Minister-counselor of the Polish embassy, Mr Marek Kubersk. Several imminent speakers gave a view on the history of Poland, the role of Poland in the EU and a view on how to do business with Poland. A dialogue with two Polish students concluded this very interesting day. We are sure that we have opened doors and that students, as well as teachers, will want to discover this great country.
9th International Conference and Workshop on Ambient Intelligence and Embedded Systems (AmiEs-2010)
K.H.KEMPEN will organize a 9th International Conference and Workshop on Ambient Intelligence and Embedded Systems. (AmiEs-2010) on 30 September and 1 October 2010.
During this international event, designers and applicants of Embedded Systems and high end electronics become acquainted with the latest technologies and interchange ideas with colleagues. The confernece is intended to bring together technology and education.
The workshop is open to the public the entire two days. Prominent suppliers of embedded systems and design automation present innovative developments and technologies for a faultless and smooth design flow.
The 9th International Conference offers the latest tooling technology and contacts necessary for performance improvement of embedded systems to developers.

Intensive Programme Well, Man? in Turku, Finland, May 2010
IP Well, Man? is an intensive programme under the Lifelong Learning Programme in which students of six countries made a profile of the European man between 18 and 60 years. The six countries involved were Finland, Spain, Estonia, Lithuania, Greece and Belgium. In total 10 lecturers and 40 students participated, of the courses of nursing and midwifery, as well as social work. This project is unique as it tackles the health situation of men, and there is relatively little information about health problems and health promotion for men.
GRUNDTVIG NEVA (Nederlands voor anderstaligen - Dutch for non-native speakers).

The project ‘Dutch for Non-Native Speakers’ is a consortium of KHKempen, Tilburg University (The Netherlands) and Vienna University (Austria) who formed a learning partnership in order to fulfil the needs of teachers and adult students in the area of Dutch for non-native speakers, teaching language and culture to adults. The learning partnership allowed teachers and adult students to exchange information and experience about:
- Specific didactic problems in the area of Dutch as a second and foreign language for adults
- Teaching the culture and history of the Dutch-speaking countries for adults
- Innovative techniques in the area of teaching Dutch language and culture
Students and lecturers of the teacher education departments were involved. The project resulted in a website (http://neva.ned.univie.ac.at) and the students wrote their final works about NEVA. Study visits to Tilburg and Vienna were very rewarding.
GRUNDTVIG BLAID (Blended Learning and Intercultural Dialogue) for teachers and working students of the Biosciences and Technology Department

BLAID is a learning partnership where universities and university colleges of Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Lithuania and Ireland learn about different methods of blended learning for adult students. They meet twice a year and have done so in April at KHKempen and in October 2008 in Arendal, Norway. Five of our working students have thus been able to have a very intensive international and intercultural experience, while exchanging views and ideas, but also technical methods such as learning platforms, videoconferencing methods and communications methods such as the dialogue bench.
"Internationalisation at Home" at the Business Studies Department Geel

For the fourth time the Business Studies Department in Geel organised its “International Days” for the 3rd year professional bachelors, the postgraduates of SME Management and the international IBUS students.
The International Days started with a seminar on India, which was attended by the students and by representatives from local companies. Five specialists presented their views on the Indian society and economy. Afterwards there was a lively debate.
There was a workshop and a game on intercultural communication and the students played the World Trade Game.
Some 30 guest lecturers from partner institutions from all over the European Union were invited to teach about a business topic and about their countries.
They competed together with the students in a European quiz that was organised by the international students.
The guest lecturers also appreciated the social programme that was organised for them.
On the last day the students presented the e-zines they had made about these International Days. They showed how much they had appreciated the whole experience and what they had learned.
These International Days created an international atmosphere on campus, preparing the students for a job in an international environment and a multicultural society.

For the first time an international module for health care
From March to May 2007 our two departments of health care organised for the first time an international module for incoming students. The Health Care Department Turnhout dealt with "Diversity & Unity" on 5-6 May 2007, and our colleagues in Lier tackled "Sexuality - Rite de Passage - Child Birth" on 3-4 May. The group of international students were introduced into other subjects by our KULeuven-association partners, in Kortrijk, Aalst, Sint Niklaas, Leuven and Mechelen. The practical aspect of the training were not forgotten, as work placements and practical sessions completed the 3-month programme.
The International Week of the Business Studies Department Geel, December 2006
For the third time, in December 2006, the Business Studies Department in Geel welcomes lecturers from their partner institutions from all over the European Union. These guest lecturers teach under the Socrates/Erasmus programme. For the students of the 3rd year professional bachelors of Business Management, Office Management and Applied Computer Science this is a wonderful opportunity to participate in Internationalisation at Home. They listen to renowned speakers from Flanders and abroad and participate actively in cross-course workshops in intercultural communication in business. The entire week an international atmosphere is created on campus, preparing the students for a job in an international environment and a multicultural society.
The International Class for Teacher Education
In 2005-2006 the department of Teacher Education in Vorselaar organised for the first time an International Class for Teacher Education Students in cooperation with KHBO, Ehsal and KdG.
Twenty students from five European countries, including our own KHK students, participated in the Erasmus programme, which consists of four modules in the second semester (Spring semester). The programme allows students to obtain 20 ECTS credits.

An Intensive Programme for Social Work
From 21 to 31 March 2007 the Social Work Department will organize the first Intensive Programme for Social Work at our Campus in Geel. Eighty students from 5 countries will participate in workshops concerning During ten days they will study one of these topics: disabled people, elderly (aging), ethnic minorities, gender, urban degeneration and employability.
On 8 and 9 October the lecturers of the participating University Colleges were in Geel to prepare the Intensive Programme.
KHK students: Placements in developing countries
KHKempen students can do a placement in a developing country for which the Flemish University Council (VLIR) offers grants up to 1000€. These grants were introduced in 2003 and since then 33 students have done a placement in countries such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Suriname.
